In this image I can see a wide range of people that are close to each other. I can also see that there are buildings in the background, or behind them, that are emitting light from the windows. The people in the image seem to be the subject of it, however, they seem to be distorted and blurred in some way. There seems to be an effect that has been placed on all of the people in the image, which is unique and fascinating to me. The composition in this image is interesting, since they aren’t spread apart from each other, and they seem to be close to one another. The space between them is very minimal, unlike the buildings in the background, which are further away from one another. The pattern in this image seems to be creative; the people in this image have an odd effect on them, which makes them look blurred. This is odd to me because most images will blur or distort the part of the image that is not the focus, however in this image the artist has distorted the focus of the image, which makes this photograph much different from the other images. The tone/colour of this image seems to be almost like a warm colour, which compliments the use of the light very well. The warm colour is appealing to look at, and it makes everything in the image look more brighter. The light has been manipulated in many ways. For example, the tree in the background that seems to have lights on it has also been distorted, which makes me think that not only the people in the image are the centre of attention in the image, but so is the light. I think this because the sparkler firework on the left that the person is holding has also been distorted, which makes the light almost spread. The artist has also complimented the light through the use of the atmosphere. The image has been taken not in the early hours, but it seems to be taken at night, or later in the day. Even though the atmosphere of the image is dark, the aesthetic seems to still be light. The mood of the image seems to be warm, and welcoming; this might be because of the use of light and the tone of the image. This picture clearly belongs to the genre of street photography; i can tell because of the buildings in the background, or behind the people, which show that they aren’t exactly inside. This image seems to be a little different from other images that belong in the street photography genre. The reason I think this is because of the dark atmosphere. Most images that belong in the street photography genre are usually taken in the daytime, and have a light atmosphere, however this image is a lot different. This image has also used artificial light, rather than natural light, which is a lot different from other images. Street photographs usually don’t use many effects on the focus of the image, which is usually the people in the image.
I think that Ming Smith created this image through merging effects with the artificial light in the image. For example, the light i. this image has also been distorted, along with the people in this image. Ming Smith might have edited her image in a software, such as photo pea or photoshop, since the tone of the image seems to have been tampered with. The tone of the image compliments the use of the artificial light in the image, and makes it look brighter. If I had to make an image like this, I would have to take a good look at the composition, and the space in the image. I would have to take everything into account, in order to make it how Ming Smith made it. The people in the image seem to also have been put there, or the image has been staged in a way. I think this because the people are close together, almost as if they had to take a photo together. The image seems to be fake as well.
This picture makes me feel warm, or at ease because of the tone/colour and the light that is being used. The use of light makes me feel at ease, and safe whereas the dark makes me feel the opposite. The thought that the image is being taken later in the day, but light is still present is warming. The atmosphere stays dark, however the aesthetic is light and bright. The light can also be linked to being good, or being happy, which is how I feel. My feelings seem to be unclear but I feel nice when I look at this image for an odd reason. If I had to ask the artist three questions I would ask, “What made you want to make this photograph?”, “Have you ever been inspired by another photographer?” and, “What editing software do you use?” I feel like these questions would be enough to reveal something more from this image, and how it was created. I would like to know about the origins of this image, and what made the artist think of the idea. I would want to know what made the artist want to take and edit this photograph because I feel like the question holds a lot of power to it.
